Agent newsreader has been around since 1995 and has always been a leader in the industry. The client is now up to version 4.2 with 5.0 in development. Recent enhancements include image preview, improved SSL performance, and NZB file support. The database has also been updated to hold up to 8 Gb of data including up to 1 billion headers.
Whether you are focusing on binary newsgroups or text groups Agent gives you a nice interface for viewing. It also offers a junk filter to help you avoid all those junk messages while keeping those you trust. If your interests include image groups Agent will allow you to preview images within the normal viewing window or in their own preview pane.
Do you use multiple Usenet providers or one that has multiple servers? Agent will allow you to download headers and messages without worrying about which server its coming from. You can also set limits per server to help with metered accounts. It will combine the messages from various servers to help minimize missing parts.
Easily organize your downloads via a number of pre-configured folder schemes for binary and test newsgroups. You can also create your own schemes for videos, mp3's, games, etc.
Through Agent's Usenet automation feature you can setup the tasks you want completed then sit back and wait for them to finish. It will also detect and use the maximum number of connections per server.
Another feature definitely worth mentioning is Forte's new APN (Agent Premium Newsgroups) service. We have not tested the service but you can because they offer a free 10 Gb/mo. 3 month account with the purchase of Agent.
In conclusion Agent offers a feature rich environment for both text and binary newsgroups. With a solid track record of innovation, Forte continues to provide quality releases.
