Mozilla offers Thunderbird for email and text Usenet groups. Thunderbird is well designed and easy to use. The newsgroup reader functionality allows you to easily read and post to multiple discussions. The fact that it is open source and thus free is a big plus as well.

If you are looking for binary newsgroups then we would suggest looking at some of our other newsreader reviews. For text groups Thunderbird is definitely worth a try.

Subscribe to newsgroups and Thunderbird will handle the headers. If the group has a lot of posts then you will get a "Download Headers" message. Simply indicate how many headers you would like to pull and click "Download". That way you don't have to wait for all the headers if you are only interested in recent posts.
