Usenet Update – Fall 2008

Every year Usenet providers line up their biggest updates for the Fall season. This year is no exception. These updates include major improvements to binary retention, more Usenet account options and discounts for ISP customers left without newsgroup access.

We will start with Giganews which was already the industry leader in binary retention. As has been their trend over the summer Giganews raised the mark once again. They now offer 240 days of binary retention to lead all newsgroup providers. Read our Giganews review for more details.

Easynews is a pioneer and very well known in the Usenet community. Over the last few years they had fallen behind in retention rates. That is not the case anymore. Over the summer they raised binary retention from 40 days all the way up to 205 days and added more account options. See our Easynews review for more details.

Supernews has also been around for a long time offering wuality Usenet services. Like Easynews, Supernews ahd fallen behind in binary retention is recent years. Not anymore as they have upgraded storage to handle 110 days of binary retention on multipart and 150 days of singlepart retention. They now offer both unlimtied and metered monthly accounts. The summer was also busy for ISP’s offering newsgroup access. Or maybe we should say busy cutting customers newsgroup access. Time Warner got things started by discontinuing newsgroup servers in early June. AT&T, Sprint and Verizon followed suit cutting .alt newsgroup access. Several Usenet providers are offering specials to those affected. See our AT&T – Tine Warner – Verizon – Sprint – Usenet specials page for more details.
