Most Usenet providers offers multiple news server addresses and alternate ports based on location and encryption. The table below lists the server addresses for each newsgroup service along with secure (SSL) and standard (non-encrypted) ports.
Alternate ports are a great way to avoid traffic shaping. If you notice yourconnection is slow your ISP might be throttling Usenet traffic. Through throttling the default NNTP ports whic are 119 for non-secure and 563 for SSL. Using an alternate port should help get around this issue.
